Description
A vintage Italian movie poster of ''Pursued'', a 1947 Western film directed by Raoul Walsh and is notable for blending elements of the Western genre with film noir. The film stars Robert Mitchum and Teresa Wright and is known for its dark and psychological storytelling. Here's a description of the movie:
Plot Summary:
"Pursued" is set in the American West and tells the story of Jeb Rand, played by Robert Mitchum, a young boy who is orphaned after his family is brutally murdered. Jeb is taken in by the Callum family, who raise him as one of their own. However, he grows up haunted by the traumatic memories of his family's murder and the mysterious circumstances surrounding it.
As Jeb becomes an adult, he falls in love with his adopted sister, Thorley Callum, portrayed by Teresa Wright. Their forbidden romance is at the center of the film's complex narrative. The Callum family is a powerful and influential force in the region, and their dark past, along with Jeb's own past, begin to catch up with them.
The film unfolds as Jeb becomes entangled in a web of violence, betrayal, and family secrets. He is pursued not only by external threats but also by the haunting memories of his past. The narrative is structured in a non-linear fashion, with flashbacks and dream sequences contributing to the film's noirish atmosphere.
"Pursued" is known for its moody and atmospheric cinematography, which evokes a sense of foreboding and tension throughout the film. The blending of Western and film noir elements gives it a unique and distinctive style.
Robert Mitchum delivers a strong performance as Jeb Rand, portraying a character haunted by his past and driven by a desire for answers and revenge. Teresa Wright also shines as Thorley, whose conflicted feelings for Jeb add complexity to the story.
The film explores themes of identity, memory, and the cycle of violence, as Jeb is inexorably drawn into a deadly conflict with his past and the forces that seek to destroy him. "Pursued" is often considered one of the earliest examples of the psychological Western subgenre, where the inner turmoil and psychological struggles of the characters take precedence over traditional cowboy heroics.
While "Pursued" may not be as well-known as some other classic Westerns, it is appreciated by film enthusiasts for its unique approach to the genre and its atmospheric storytelling. It remains a notable entry in the Western film canon and a precursor to the more psychologically complex Westerns that would follow in the years to come..
About the artist:
Luigi Martinati (1893-1983), born in Florence, Italy, on Dec. 31, 1893, was a significant Italian illustrator and painter. He spent most of his career creating artwork for film posters.
While growing up in Florence, he attended the Academy of Fine Arts, then moved to Rome in 1911 when he was 18. There, he worked as an apprentice for film poster artist Federico Ballester (1868-1926), the father of Anselmo Ballester, who also became a poster artist.
Between 1923 and 1941, he devoted himself to advertising illustration. He designed posters of various subjects and themes, from commercial advertising billboards to tourist signs to political posters to significant celebratory events.
He later became the director of IGAP (Impresa Generale Affissioni PubblicitĂ ), a leading advertising agency in Rome. In that role, he began collaborating with various film companies, primarily Warner Brothers studios. Soon after World War II, the advertising sector became dedicated exclusively to movie illustrations.
In the mid-1940s, he teamed up with two other painters of Italian film posters, Anselmo Ballester and Alfredo Capitani. Together, they founded BCM studio (using letters from their surnames) and dedicated their efforts exclusively to producing film posters.
Martinati's images typically invoked robust realism. His style was characterized by a foreground depicting a large portrait with a minor scene in the background. He also stands out for his technique, which focused on the strength of the subjects without lingering on details and particulars. The heroes of Martinati posters are realistic and believable, with few exaggerated expressions or poses..
In 1959, he cut back on his partnership with Warner Brothers and other film production and distribution companies. By 1967, he discontinued his successful career as a film poster artist to work primarily as an easel painter.
He died in Rome in 1983 at the age of 90.
