At centre left is Chiaki Naito-Muka, payload specialist representing Japan's space agency (NASDA). Clockwise from Naito-Muka are: Scott F. Parazynski, mission specialist; John H. Glenn payload specialist; Curtis L. Brown, mission commander; Steven W. Lindsey, pilot; Stephen K. Robinson, mission specialist; and Pedro Duque, mission specialist representing the European Space Agency (ESA). The purposes of this mission were to conduct experiments and launch and retrieve the Spartan satellite.
