Description
Ilfracombe’s architecture is diverse and in composing the doors poster we wanted to represent the main historical styles in the town. Ilfracombe’s Georgian heritage is represented by the top and bottom two rows.
The top row shows a series of doors from Montpelier Terrace. Georgian buildings are normally plain fronted with flat walls interspersed with rows of large sash windows however the entrances can be much more decorative. Montpelier Terrace has a series of grand porches with large classical columns holding up pitched roofs.
The bottom row shows Adelaide Terrace which has plainer columns and flat roofs and steps up to the front door. Similar in style are the doors in Hillsborough Terrace which feature in the row second from bottom.
The third row from the bottom shows doorways from Langleigh Terrace and Broad Park Avenue. The buildings are of stone with brick quoining around the doors. The yellow Marland bricks were from the brickworks in Torrington and are made of local clay. They are renowned for their toughness and feature in building in all the towns of the area. The arches have freestone lapels and some red decorative brick work.
Rows two and three from the top show entrances from the Victorian Gothic Revival Style of architecture that was very popular in the town. These quirky doors can be spotted around the Torrs Park and Chambercombe areas. At the centre of the third row down is the classical porch of the Tunnels Beaches Bath House which is next to the entrance of Ilfracome’s famous tunnels beaches.
