Description
Cape Verde Islands, off the western coast of Africa. North is towards top right. From upper left to lower right, the islands are: Brava, Fogo, Sao Tiago and Maio. The streaks of cloud at lower centre and lower left are caused by the trade winds passing over each island. At upper centre and upper right, semicircular Von Karman vortices are seen. These interlocking semicircles of cloud form as the prevailing wind flow is distorted as it passes around an island. In this case, the vortices are formed by airflow around some other islands (not seen) in the Cape Verde archipelago, including Santa Antao and Sao Nicolau. This image was taken from the Apollo 9 spacecraft.
