Description
Glorious view of Venice by French painter Felix Ziem (1821-1911) showing a boat with its sails unfurled, festooned with flags, on a fast day on the Grand Canal in Venice. Ziem was influenced by the Barbizon School of realist painting, known for its keen attention to 'real life', and loose brushwork that in some respects prefigured the spontaneity associated with the impressionists of the second half of the 19th century. With its brilliant light, vivid colours and imptuous brushwork, this is a classic example of the Barbizon style.
